WHAT ARE THE CRITICAL ISSUES FACING KIDS IN RICHLAND DISTRICT 2?

As a current Board member, Chairman, uncle of six (6) nieces and nephews who are currently enrolled in public schools, with at least one enrolled in elementary, middle and high school, and a wife who currently teaches in a Richland District Two High School, I am actively engaged on a DAILY basis with issues facing our students, teachers and families in this school district.

The issues and challenges we face in our district are reflective of the issues we face in public education statewide.  They include:

  • Recruiting and retaining the best teachers,
  • Poverty, Transiency (large numbers of families moving into our District),
  • Early Childhood Education preparation,
  • English Language being a Second Language,
  • Discipline and Social Isolation,
  • Growing state and federal requirements for all children to achieve at higher levels which add additional pressure on teachers and administrators,
  • A shifting demographic population that's growing in our District.

BUT, I KNOW THAT WE AS A COMMUNITY ARE ABLE TO MEET THESE CHALLENGES.

WHAT IS MY PLAN FOR ADDRESSING DISTRICT TWO'S EDUCATIONAL ISSUES:

In my opinion, we have three (3) options to address our educational challenges:

(1) WE CAN DO NOTHING, BLAME THE VICTIMS AND FOCUS ONLY ON THOSE KIDS THAT HAVE IDENTIFIED TALENT.   I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT DO THIS.
I have worked hard for the past four years on the School Board and I have stood up to those who only want to champion the causes of this small group.  I have stated my position from the beginning and I have not wavered. I will continue to represent ALL 26,000 students (current enrollment) in Richland School District Two.

(2) WE CAN ABANDON THE SHIP OR RUN AWAY WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH!
I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT DO THIS.
I believe that the heterogeneous community which exists in Northeast Columbia provides a richer quality of life for all.  This means that when demographic shifts occur in our educational community, it is my responsibility as an educator, to do what's necessary to ensure that ALL of our students are equipped with the skills they need to achieve their highest potential; from our brightest to those who are the furthest behind.  I am not willing to give up on any student in Richland Two.

(3) WE CAN STAY IN PLACE AND FIGHT FOR THE SUCCESS OF EVERY CHILD IN RICHLAND 2.
I ABSOLUTELY WILL DO THIS.

  • I will continue to be committed to every school and student in Richland 2.
  • I will continue to support efforts that allow us to recruit and retain the best teachers.
  • I will continue to focus on making sure that our teacher salaries are competitive at the Southeastern average for both new teachers and current teachers. WHY? Because I believe that TEACHERS CAUSE LEARNING.
  • I will continue to look for ways to expand School Choice in District Two.  We must increase the availability of Choice for more students in our District.
  • I will continue to expand the role the District serves in Early Childhood Education and increase the number of classrooms that have available.  The key to a successful academic future is a successful academic start in Kindergarten.
  • I will continue to seek more active partnerships between our District and Early Childhood Providers who are serving kids that will be enrolled in our schools in the near future.
  • I will continue to use DATA that shows how every child is doing in every classroom, in making sound educational decisions.
  • I will continue to focus on building relationships with the business community, and institutions of higher education that create viable educational options for our students who are in school and for our graduates once they have completed high school.
  • I will continue to be an advocate and voice for public education at the local, district, state and national level.
  • I will continue to be a strong educational leader who will always challenge our system to look for better ways of serving our students.
  • I will continue to be a sound  fiscal agent of taxpayer dollars and as demonstrated this year with our district's request of County Council, I will not ask for any more money or increases than we absolutely need to maintain a high quality school district.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IS EVIDENT IN CLASSROOMS, PROGRAMS AND SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT.  IN ORDER FOR THIS LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE TO CONTINUE, WE MUST BE WILLING TO ADJUST OUR APPROACH, AND MAKE CHANGES BASED ON THE GOALS WE HAVE IN PLACE FOR EVERY CHILD.

OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, I HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT I HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND THE COURAGE TO LEAD THIS DYNAMIC SCHOOL DISTRICT. IF I AM RE-ELECTED TO SERVE ANOTHER FOUR YEARS, YOU CAN BE ASSURED I WILL CONTINUE TO DO THE SAME THING.  I LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU FOUR MORE YEARS.
